Casting the right people for your video

The person on screen has to feel right for the message and the audience. We help decide whether that should be an actor, presenter, staff member, customer or subject-matter expert, then handle the practical work of getting them ready to film.

Casting is about choosing who the audience will believe.

A strong performance starts with the right person, not simply the most experienced person.

Some projects need a professional actor who can deliver exact lines, repeat an action and take direction. Others work best with the people who know the subject first-hand, such as a staff member, customer or technical expert.

We help make that call early, because it affects the script, schedule, budget and way we prepare for filming.

See how our casting process works

We start with what the person needs to do.

There is no standard casting brief. We look at the job the person has in the video, then work back from the audience, the message and the demands of the shoot.

01 / Trust

Who will the audience listen to?

A customer may be most convincing in a case study. A subject expert may be right for training. A professional actor can make a scripted scene feel natural.

02 / Delivery

How demanding is the performance?

Long scripted sections, technical demonstrations, comic timing and repeated action all place different demands on the person in front of the camera.

03 / Brand

Does the person feel right for you?

We look beyond age and appearance. Tone, warmth, authority, energy and communication style all affect how the organisation comes across.

04 / Practicalities

Can they do the job on the day?

Availability, location, usage, wardrobe, script preparation and the time needed for filming are part of the casting decision too.

Choosing between professional talent and real people

Both can work well. The right choice depends on what viewers need to see and hear, and how much performance the video asks of the person.

When an actor or presenter is the better choice

Professional talent is often useful when the wording and timing must be controlled, the person is playing a role, or the shoot involves repeated actions and multiple takes.

  • Television commercials
  • Scripted corporate scenes
  • Training demonstrations
  • Direct-to-camera presentations

When your own people are the better choice

Staff, customers and subject experts bring genuine knowledge and experience. They are often the most credible choice for interviews, case studies and technical content.

  • Customer stories
  • Leadership messages
  • Expert interviews
  • Real workplace demonstrations

How Dream Engine handles casting

We scale the process to the project. A major commercial may need agents, auditions and callbacks. A corporate presenter may only need a focused shortlist and a self-tape.

01 / Brief

Define the role

We agree on who the person is, what they need to communicate, the tone, audience, filming requirements and any non-negotiables.

02 / Search

Source suitable people

Depending on the project, we approach talent agents, performers we know, specialist presenters or people within the client’s organisation.

03 / Review

Create a useful shortlist

We review showreels, photographs, availability, fees and relevant experience, then give the client a manageable group of strong options.

04 / Audition

See how they handle the material

A self-tape, video call or in-person audition lets us assess delivery, screen presence, interpretation and how well the person takes direction.

05 / Approval

Confirm the choice

The client sees the shortlist and audition material. We discuss the trade-offs, but the final casting decision is agreed with the client.

06 / Booking

Lock in the details

We confirm availability, rates, usage, wardrobe, script access, call times and anything else the performer needs before production.

Making the decision

Choosing the right real person for the video.

For an interview, case study or expert video, genuine knowledge and a useful perspective matter more than a polished performance.

We help the client choose someone who understands the subject, can explain it clearly and has something useful to say to the audience. We also consider whether they are comfortable taking part, available for filming and able to speak openly about the topic.

Good preparation helps people give a better performance.

Once the cast is confirmed, we make sure everyone knows what will happen and what they need to prepare.

Actors and presenters receive the approved script or audition material with enough time to understand it. Staff and customers are usually better served by clear topics, context and practical guidance than by memorising answers.

  • Script, treatment or interview topics
  • Wardrobe and grooming guidance
  • Location, parking and call times
  • Usage and release requirements
  • Autocue planning where useful
  • A clear contact for questions

We keep supporting people once the camera rolls.

The Dream Engine producer and director create a calm set, explain what is needed and guide each person through the performance. For a detailed direct-to-camera script, an autocue can make delivery easier without asking someone to memorise every word.

Common questions

Casting FAQs

Do we need professional actors for our video?

Not necessarily. Actors are useful for scripted scenes, exact dialogue and repeated action, but staff, customers and subject experts are often more credible for interviews, case studies and technical content. We recommend the option that best suits the audience and the job the person needs to do.

Can Dream Engine source actors and presenters?

Yes. We can source actors and presenters through talent agents, professional networks and people we have worked with before. We prepare the brief, review suitable options and manage the shortlist, auditions and booking as part of the production.

How do remote auditions and self-tapes work?

We send shortlisted people a small section of the script with clear instructions. They record it and return the file, or perform it during a video call. This lets the client and production team compare delivery without organising an in-person audition.

Can we use our own staff or customers?

Yes. Real staff and customers can bring knowledge and credibility that an actor cannot reproduce. We help choose suitable participants, explain what filming involves and support them with interview preparation or clear performance guidance.

Who makes the final casting decision?

The final decision is made with the client. Dream Engine prepares and assesses the options, explains the strengths and practical considerations, and makes a recommendation. The client reviews the shortlist and audition material before anyone is booked.

What affects actor or presenter fees?

Fees can depend on preparation and filming time, the performer’s experience, the type of role, where and how long the video will be used, and whether paid advertising is involved. We confirm the expected costs and usage before the person is booked.

Does Dream Engine direct people on camera?

Yes. The Dream Engine producer or director guides actors, presenters and real participants through the filming. We help with pace, wording, eyeline, movement and repeated takes while keeping the set calm and giving people enough time to settle in.
