Launching Epson EcoTank With Jimeoin
In 2020, Epson engaged Dream Engine to produce a series of television commercials and social videos for its EcoTank printers.
EcoTank printers use refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges. Comedian Jimeoin fronted the campaign, bringing a dry, understated performance to a clear product proposition.
The challenge
Moving a Sydney Production to Melbourne
COVID travel restrictions meant Jimeoin could not travel to Sydney, where the shoot was originally planned.
The production moved to Melbourne, while Epson and the agency remained in Sydney. They still needed to watch each setup, follow the camera feed and give feedback during filming.
The action
Keeping the Set Simple and the Product Clear
We filmed at Hitmaker Studios in Port Melbourne using its white cyclorama.
Instead of making the background completely white, we lit it to retain some texture. The grey-white finish gave the frame depth and let us draw attention to Jimeoin and the printer.
The commercials were scripted and storyboarded so the product and performance stayed at the centre of each shot.

Giving Sydney Stakeholders a Live View of the Shoot
We streamed two feeds over Zoom so the agency and client could take part from Sydney.
One feed showed the camera output. The other showed a wide view of the studio. Together, they let stakeholders follow the action, ask questions and give feedback while the crew worked in Melbourne.

The action
Using a Looser Approach for Social Videos
The television commercials followed the approved scripts and storyboards. The social videos gave Jimeoin more room to play with the material.
Some ideas developed during the shoot and became part of the shorter edits. This gave Epson a second style of content from the same production.
The result
A Campaign That Led to More Work With Epson
The campaign delivered television commercials and short social videos despite the travel restrictions around the production.
Epson later engaged Dream Engine for another series of commercials.
Client feedback
Epson
I have no hesitation in recommending Dream Engine for their professionalism, attention to detail, quick turnaround and high-quality output. Despite a very tight schedule and numerous unforeseen challenges, Ryan and the team delivered time after time.
