Dream Engine recently completed a healthcare video production for the College of Intensive Care Medicine. Filming took place inside the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where we spent time with doctors who specialise in critical care.
The purpose of the project was to create a compelling recruitment video for medical graduates who are considering their specialty options. The College wanted a realistic and human portrayal of intensive care medicine: the responsibility, the teamwork, the emotional demands, and the sense of purpose that draws people into the field.
To achieve this, our camera crew worked closely with senior ICU specialists and trainees, capturing interviews and observational footage inside one of Australia’s busiest intensive care wards. This included filming patient rounds, discussions among medical teams, and the everyday environment that shapes the work of an intensivist.
The interviews formed the heart of the production. We spoke with doctors at different stages of their careers and asked them to reflect on why they chose intensive care, what the work demands, and what they find most meaningful. Their stories revealed a field that is challenging but rewarding, defined by rapid decision-making, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the privilege of caring for the sickest patients.
Our approach was to create a video that was honest and grounded in the reality of clinical work. Rather than relying on scripts, we let the specialists speak in their own words. Their insights helped convey the mix of clinical skill, emotional resilience and curiosity that the specialty requires.
The final video is now used by the College of Intensive Care Medicine as part of its outreach to medical graduates. It provides a clear and authentic look at the profession and helps young doctors understand what a career in intensive care medicine involves.
