Client Background
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) manages Australia’s electricity and gas markets and systems. It plays a central role in maintaining energy reliability, operating the National Electricity Market and supporting Australia’s transition to renewable energy.
The Challenge
AEMO needed to explain complex information about National Electricity Market reform in a way that was clear, accurate and accessible to a broad stakeholder audience.
The subject matter involved technical concepts that are difficult to communicate through text alone. Energy market reform involves systems, processes, participants and policy changes that can quickly become dense or abstract. AEMO needed a communication tool that could simplify the material without making it feel oversimplified.
The Solution
Dream Engine produced a custom animated explainer video that used motion graphics, custom visual design and carefully structured narration to guide viewers through the key ideas.
Rather than relying on technical diagrams or lengthy written explanations, the animation presented the information step by step. This made it easier for viewers to understand the purpose of the reform, the role of different participants and the broader context of Australia’s changing energy system.
Through animation, we were able to:
- Turn complex energy market information into a clear visual sequence.
- Show relationships between systems, participants and processes that would be difficult to film.
- Maintain a professional tone suitable for government, industry and stakeholder audiences.
- Create a reusable communication asset for presentations, websites, events and stakeholder engagement.
The project also demonstrated how effective government video production can make technical information more accessible while still maintaining accuracy and authority.
Why Animation Was the Right Approach
Many parts of the energy market are not visible in a practical sense. You cannot easily film market structures, reform processes, electricity flows or the interaction between different systems and stakeholders.
Animation allowed these ideas to be represented visually. It gave AEMO a way to explain abstract concepts clearly, using movement, icons, diagrams and visual pacing to help viewers follow the logic of the message.
This made the video more engaging than a written document, while still giving AEMO control over the accuracy, tone and structure of the communication.
The Result
The finished animation gave AEMO a clear and professional way to explain a technical subject to a broad audience. Instead of relying only on detailed reports, presentations or static diagrams, AEMO could use the video to introduce key concepts quickly and consistently.
The animation helped make the reform message easier to understand, supporting stakeholder communication around an important area of Australia’s energy future.
The Takeaway
For organisations working in energy, infrastructure, government, healthcare, technology or other technical sectors, animation can be one of the most effective ways to explain complex information.
It allows abstract processes to become visible, helps audiences understand relationships between ideas, and gives organisations a polished communication tool that can be used across multiple channels.
