Background
The Client: Autodesk
Autodesk is a global software company serving industries including architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing and entertainment.
Autodesk Construction Cloud brought together tools to help construction businesses manage project information and coordinate their teams. PlanGrid, featured in this project, gave people on site access to drawings, tasks, photos and quality records.
Autodesk commissioned Dream Engine to produce a customer case study video featuring BN Electrical. The film would show how a real contractor used the software and what it helped the team achieve.
The challenge
Showing Contractors How the Software Helps
Autodesk needed to show contractors how its construction software could help them manage their projects.
Learning a new system takes time and changes the way a team works. Before making that commitment, contractors need to know how the software will help them communicate, keep track of changes and complete the job.
The video needed to answer those questions by showing how a contractor was already using the software on a real project.
Why video
Hearing From the Customer
Video gave Autodesk a way to show the software in use and let a customer explain what had improved.
In a case study video, viewers can hear the customer’s answers, see their work and judge whether the experience is relevant to their own business. For Autodesk, this was a chance to help contractors feel more confident about adopting the software.
BN Electrical is a Melbourne electrical contractor working across health, science and education projects. Its team described using PlanGrid to communicate design changes quickly, track progress for the builder and complete quality checks on site.
The action: filming
Filming at the Capitol Theatre
We filmed this construction case study video with BN Electrical’s team at Melbourne’s Capitol Theatre, where the company had worked on the building’s refurbishment.
We set up the interviews on stage, lighting the speakers and recording their answers with the auditorium behind them. The theatre’s distinctive ceiling provided the backdrop. The team could describe their role in the refurbishment while we showed viewers the finished work.
We filmed Matthew Bien-Izowski, BN Electrical’s founder and managing director at the time, and Paul Wandmaker from project operations and design. Together, they explained both the business reasons for using the software and its practical role on site.

The action: editing
Editing the Customer Story
We edited the interviews around the questions a prospective Autodesk customer would ask: what does the software do, how is it used, and what does it improve?
The film introduces BN Electrical and the demands of its work, then moves into specific examples of using PlanGrid and the difference it made. The interviewees explain the experience in their own words.
We combined the interviews with footage of the team using tablets and discussing the building, so viewers could see the work the speakers were describing.
The final edit runs for 2 minutes and 16 seconds. As with our other technology video production projects, we kept the explanations clear for viewers who might be seeing the software for the first time.

The result
How Autodesk Uses the Video
Autodesk received a short film it could use to introduce its software through BN Electrical’s experience.
Autodesk published the film in its Digital Builder article about BN Electrical. Visitors can watch the team explain how they use the software, then read more about the company’s move to digital construction management.
For people researching Autodesk’s products, the video offers a practical example of what they can expect. They can hear how the software helps on site from the people who use it.
Autodesk’s marketing and sales teams can also share the film in presentations and when following up with prospective customers.
Client feedback
What Autodesk Said
